ABOUT CARRIE

It would make sense that I landed here in residential architectural design. Reflecting on the years of ‘magical’ childhood play, all carried the same theme, creating and building spaces: whether it was using my friend’s basement to build cities with large refrigerator and stove boxes from her father’s job as a Whirlpool appliance salesman or designing snow forts at the end of kid’s driveways for the blizzard of ’78 snowball fight, making sure that compartments were built in all of the strategic places for mobility. Visiting relative’s homes that had unique features like dumbwaiters, elevator shafts, laundry shoots and trap doors would keep me entertained for hours. Playing with doll houses (not with the dolls themselves but setting up the rooms and making changes to the house) was always a thrill. Those early days turned into scribbling floor plans and elevations of dream homes in a sometimes-boring class on my paper bag covered school books.

I was encouraged by my parents to do aptitude testing in my 20’s, while I was searching for the ‘job that didn’t feel like a job’ after reading “what color is my parachute.”  Testing results came back and made no sense at all. They suggested that my higher aptitudes were in areas of spatial design and design memory, furthermore recommending that I become an Art Curator.  Huh?  That made no sense at all, I never opted for art classes nor did anyone ever encourage me based on what I produced in a general art class, so I dismissed those results and on went with life as usual as a Business/Systems analyst in software engineering.

When I left the business world to stay home to raise young children, I began spending my down time reading through home renovation magazines and books and started the endless fun of remodeling my first home and that process has never stopped, house after house.  I decided I needed to turn this pastime into a real-life career and took the leap of faith to go back to architecture school at night in Boston at BAC.  It was scary and thrilling and wonderful and I have not regretted a moment since.

I have now been in my own studio since 2014 and am blessed to be able to work with the amazing clients and colleagues that I have had over these years. I look forward to many more.
